Pocket TELNET

Pocket TELNET is a telnet client program for Windows CE-based handheld PCs. It is similar in functionality to the telnet client program found in Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000, with one important difference: it provides better support for advanced character attributes, including color text.

Are you trying to install this application on a Pocket PC like an iPAQ? The version featured on this page will not work; it is designed for Handheld PCs. A Windows CE 1.0 version (for the HP 320LX and possibly other machines with the SH3 processor) is also available here for direct download. (No installation program provided; right-click the link to commence download, then copy the file to your handheld PC.)

Installation Instructions

The Pocket TELNET package can be downloaded from http://www.vttoth.com/LPK/TELNET.exe. To install, simply run the downloaded file on your desktop computer with ActiveSync installed, and follow on-screen instructions. If ActiveSync is not installed on your desktop, you can still use this installation kit. After the files are extracted, copy the file TELNET.StrongARM.CAB or TELNET.SH3.CAB to your handheld, and double-tap it with the stylus in Windows Explorer. If you are accessing the Web from your handheld, you can also download these files from http://www.vttoth.com/LPK/TELNET.StrongARM.CAB or http://www.vttoth.com/LPK/TELNET.SH3.CAB directly.

Pocket TELNET is a commercial application. The unregistered version can be used only to access mud2.com, the Internet's best multi-user text game. Registration costs USD 14.95. Once you register Pocket TELNET, you'll receive an unlock key in e-mail that will enable full functionality of the application.

Notes

Pocket TELNET is a Windows CE application that has been tested for compatibility with the HP Jornada 720 and the Phenom LG. One user reported successful installation on an HP Jornada 680. It is unknown at this time whether or not it runs on other platforms using the ARM or Hitachi SH3 processors. Reports indicating success or failure to install this product on other platforms would be much appreciated: please e-mail vttoth@vttoth.com.

Update (July 1, 2005): I just received a note from a user (thanks!) who states, "Program looks good on my SmartPhone (Cingular Phone Company) Siemens SX-66 running PocketPC 2003. Finally a telnet program that can make use of ANSI graphics."

Pocket TELNET does not currently support the following obscure TELNET and VT100 features:

• TELNET linemode option (all user input is sent immediately to the remote server)
• Hidden and blinking text attributes
• VT100 line wrap option (always on in Pocket TELNET)
• Set/clear custom tab stops
• Screen scroll command
• Print command
• Define key command

The present version of Pocket TELNET does not provide support for SSH (Secure Shell) connections. Support for SSH may be added in a future version.
